Her father, Loren Almon Logan, had been raised in neighboring county in the now almos 2 CONC t non existent town of Logan, near Marionville. The town was partly founded by his grandfathe 2 CONC r, William Logan, who along with his family had moved from Lincoln County, Tennesse in the mi 2 CONC d Ninteenth Century. Loren opened a store in Hurley. Since the small town was on a railroad 2 CONC , he like may others in small railroad town, hoped that the community would soon boom and h 2 CONC e would become wealthy. It did not, but he did make a good living off the store. He owned on 2 CONC e of the nicest two story homes in the community and his family was well taken care of. 2 CONT 2 CONT Her mother, Sarah Viola Stafford Logan, was from a family that has their roots traced thirtee 2 CONC n generation to William Stafford born in England and lived in Virginia in the 1600s. Clymena' 2 CONC s maternal grandmother, Ann Elizabeth Turner can trace her ancestry four generation to Willia 2 CONC m Turner in 1700s, also of Virginia. Clymena's paternal grandmother, Lavina Arbella Patterson 2 CONC , had Mormon connections in the Hendricks family. Lavina's grandfather, Abraham, had not join 2 CONC ed the church in Independence, Missouri, but his brother James did in the 1830s. 2 CONT 2 CONT Clymena, nicknamed "Crum" because she like to eat crumbs as a child, was born the first of fo 2 CONC ur children. The other three all boys were: Leon, Lyman and Kenneth. Leon prospered as a mana 2 CONC ger of Sears stores. He once managed the store in Havana, Cuba, and at the time of retiremen 2 CONC t ran one in Arlington, Virginia. Lyman was a stockbroker in New York. Kenneth was the postma 2 CONC ster in Hurley and later a mail carrier in Springfield, Missouri. 2 CONT 2 CONT Clymena went to college in Georgia, and later married a former Hurley classmate, Ora "Bill" H 2 CONC ilton. He was then a school pricipal in the neighboring town of Crane. Following marriage th 2 CONC e couple went to Madison, Wisconsin were Bill began work on a Ph.D degree at the University o 2 CONC f Wisconsin. Clymena worked while her husband completed school. 2 CONT 2 CONT Following graduation the couple took a job at Oklahoma A and M College (now Oklahoma State Un 2 CONC iversity) in the history department. They lived the rest of their lives together in Stillwate 2 CONC r, and had three children: Ann and twins, Janet and Jerold. The family lived in several diffe 2 CONC rent homes in Stillwater, spenting most of their tenure in an older two story frame house o 2 CONC n Third Street. After the children were raised and gone, the couple bought two different home 2 CONC s in Stillwater. 2 CONT 2 CONT Clymena was mostly a housewife but was also an active advisor of her college sorority for man 2 CONC y years. After the children were in high school, she worked in the homemaking department at t 2 CONC he College, which she enjoyed much. The couple had many long time, mostly college faculty, fr 2 CONC iends; they often met together in their bridge club or child study group. The family would us 2 CONC ually visit family in the Ozarks several times a year, Christmas and summer, for many years 2 CONC ; it was a memorable time for the whole family. Clymena and family were active members of th 2 CONC e local Presbyterian church. 2 CONT 2 CONT Clymena's children all graduated from college, Ann and Janet from Oklahoma State University 2 CONC , Jerold from Brigham Young University. Ann married Rob Roy Meador from Clearwater, Florida 2 CONC . Ann and Roy met when the family lived in Clearwater, Florida during WW II where Bill was st 2 CONC ationed as an Air Force officer in nearby Tampa. Janet first married Charlie Hollar from Sti 2 CONC llwater; they divorced. She then married Bill Heitsmit from Denver where they now live. Jerol 2 CONC d first married a BYU classmate, LaNore Olsen. After she died he married Elaine Miller for Re 2 CONC xburg, Idaho. where they now live. 2 CONT 2 CONT Clymena was usually a quiet, kind women in somewhat of a contrast with her husband who was mo 2 CONC re talkative and opinionated. It was a special experience for Travis 2 CONT and Amber 2 CONT 2 CONT 2 CONT Ora Almon Hilton's great grandfather and several of his brothers came to southwestern Missour 2 CONC i in the 1850s from Scott County, Virginia. The same group had gone to California earliet dur 2 CONC ing the gold rush. His Wiley ancestors had come to Missori a decade earlier from Guilford Cou 2 CONC nty, North Carolina. Dad's parents families lived almost side by side in Mars Hill, Barry Cou 2 CONC nty, Missouri. Three Hilton children married three Wiley siblings. His parents, Luther Hilto 2 CONC n and LaVade Wiley, had four children: Hubert, Ora (Bill), Bonnie and Ruth. The family live 2 CONC d on a farm near Hurley, Missouri early on. We have a picture of the two boys sitting on hors 2 CONC es in front of their house with the other family members close by. We have another picture o 2 CONC f Dad in school at the age of probably three of four; his brother is there also; Dad told u 2 CONC s he wanted to go to school while very young and his mother and the teacher allowed it. 2 CONT 2 CONT Personality wise, Bill was sometimes feisty and opinionated but friendly. Some said he was mo 2 CONC re like his mother; she was bit fiery at times, while his dad was calm and quiet. His siste 2 CONC r Ruth had a similar personality to Bill. Bonnie was just the opposite, loving, friendly an 2 CONC d unselfish. Hubert was more of a friendly cynic. 2 CONT 2 CONT If Bill started schol early while small, he finished well; he was valedictorian of his smal 2 CONC l high school graduating class. He then when to Drury, a small college in Springfield, Missou 2 CONC ri. After graduation he became a teacher and superintendent of school in his hometown of Cran 2 CONC e. We have another picture of him with a small high school graduation class; his sister Rut 2 CONC h is in the picture also. He was either there as a teacher or an administrator. 2 CONT 2 CONT During this time Bill and Clymena Logan married, on September 3, 1925. She was also from Hurl 2 CONC ey, and they had grown up almost neighbors. Her father owned a grocery store in town and thei 2 CONC r family had prospered. 2 CONT 2 CONT Next, Bill decided to enter the University of Wisconsin and work on a Ph.D in American histor 2 CONC y. Mom worked while Dad completed school. His area of scholarly interest became dissent in th 2 CONC e U.S. during World War I. He published numerous scholarly articles on this subject and was s 2 CONC till collecting information on it for a book into retirement years. One time while visiting m 2 CONC e in Montana after his retirement, he spent some time in Helena in Montana Historical Societ 2 CONC y Library reseaching dissent in Butte, Montana during W.W.I. 2 CONT 2 CONT In the summer of 1940 Dad took our family with him to Washington D.C. while he did historica 2 CONC l research. Our folks took us children to the sight in D.C. and nearby. Although young I reme 2 CONC mber visiting the Washinton Monumnet, the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials, the Smithsonian an 2 CONC d Mount Vernon. So all was not work with him; he loved to visit historical sites also. 2 CONT 2 CONT His first and main college teaching experience was at Oklahoma A. and M. College (Oklahoma St 2 CONC ate University today) in Stillwater, His children were all born in the early 1930s while livi 2 CONC ng in Stillwater. Ann was born in 1930. The twins, Janet and Jerold, were born in 1934. 2 CONT 2 CONT They lived in a small house on Seventy Street until the early 1940s when they moved into thei 2 CONC r long time residence on Third Street. After the family was grown Bill and Clymena bought a s 2 CONC maller, newer two bedroom house. They owned it for several years then bought a nicer house. T 2 CONC hey owned this house until Clymena's death, and Bill's move from Stillwater to Florida. 2 CONT 2 CONT Early in World War II Dad joined the army air corps as an officer. Although in his forties a 2 CONC t the time, he was patriotic and interested im military affairs. He had served briely in th 2 CONC e army toward the end of W.W.I. I asked him one time what he did in the army during W.W.I, h 2 CONC e said that he mostly enptied bedpans in Springfield for soldiers ill with the flue. During W 2 CONC .W.II he first taught airplane identifiction to young pilets at San Antonio, Texas. He next w 2 CONC as a Third Airforce historian at Tampa, Florida; the family went with him both places. Becaus 2 CONC e there was no available housing in Tampa, the family lived in Clearwater and nearby Indian R 2 CONC ocks Beach. Dad went in the service as a second lieutenant and came out a captain at wars end 2 CONC . 2 CONT 2 CONT He returned to Oklahoma A and M after the War, and taught there until retirement in the 1960s 2 CONC . He then taught one year at the University of Tulsa beford retiring permanently in Stillwate 2 CONC r. 2 CONT 2 CONT Other than teaching what hobbies did he have? For much of his life he liked gardening and yar 2 CONC d work. He loved reading and could often be seen at spare moments reading a book even when hi 2 CONC s eyesight became poor. Dad and Mom had many friends and belonged to a bridge club as well a 2 CONC s a child study club early on. The family regularly attended church; Dad was an Elder in th 2 CONC e local Presbyterian church. both Mom and Dad loved to travel. Later in life, when they had m 2 CONC ore resources, they traveled to Europe and other U.S. locations often; they loved to talk abo 2 CONC ut their travels. 2 CONT 2 CONT The delighted in their grandchildren, expecially Janet's who were in nearby Ponca City, Oklah 2 CONC oma, as well as Malinda Meador who attended Oklahoma State one year and was often at their ho 2 CONC use. 2 CONT 2 CONT Mom and Dad spent much time together. As stated earlier,Dad was intelligent, but sometimes op 2 CONC inionated, quick tempered and judgemental. Mother was almost the oposite; although intelligen 2 CONC t enough, she was patient, kind, considerate of others and nonjudgmental. Mother seemed low g 2 CONC eared while Dad had to keep busy; they usually worked well together. 2 CONT 2 CONT Mothe died a slow death in 1981 from bone cancer; Dad exhausted himself caring for her. Afte 2 CONC r her death he sold his Stllwater home and moved to Florida near daughter Ann. He lived i 2 CONC n a trailer home park for awhile then sold that home. As he grew older and more feeble, he fo 2 CONC und it necessary to live in an assisted living apartment. He did not seem to endure old age a 2 CONC nd life away for Stillwater well. He once complained to me that he did not like Florida becau 2 CONC se it had no seasons and was green all the time. Perhaps part of the problem was he did not h 2 CONC ave the respect in Florida that he had had in Stillwater. Undoubtedly, loneliness without hi 2 CONC s life time companion contributed to his unhappiness; along with old age. He died April 6, 19 2 CONC 88 and was survived by three children and twelve grandchildren. 2 CONT 2 CONT by Jerold Hilton, February 1998. 1 CHAN 2 DATE 23 Feb 2001 3 TIME 11:51:30 1 OBJE 2 FORM bmp 2 FILE E:\bill.bmp 2 TITL 2 NOTE 2 _SCBK Y 2 _PRIM N 2 _TYPE PHOTO 2 _SSHOW Y 1 OBJE 2 FORM jpg 2 FILE E:\LutherHiltonHome.jpg 2 TITL Luther Hilton's Family 2 NOTE 2 _SCBK Y 2 _PRIM N 2 _TYPE PHOTO 2 _SSHOW Y 1 OBJE 2 FORM jpg 2 FILE E:\LutherHiltonHome2.jpg 2 TITL Bill's early home in Crane, Missouri 2 NOTE 2 _SCBK Y 2 _PRIM N 2 _TYPE PHOTO 2 _SSHOW Y 1 OBJE 2 FORM bmp 2 FILE E:\LavadaWileyHiltonfamily.bmp 2 TITL Bill's earliest home near Hurley, Missouri 2 NOTE 2 _SCBK Y 2 _PRIM N 2 _TYPE PHOTO 2 _SSHOW Y 1 OBJE 2 FORM bmp 2 FILE E:\LutherHiltonfamily.bmp 2 TITL 2 NOTE 2 _SCBK Y 2 _PRIM N 2 _TYPE PHOTO 2 _SSHOW Y 1 OBJE 2 FORM jpg 2 FILE E:\BillandChildren1938.jpg 2 TITL Bill Hilton and Children in 1938 2 NOTE The picture was taken on a vacation in Colorado 2 _SCBK Y 2 _PRIM N 2 _TYPE PHOTO 2 _SSHOW Y 1 OBJE 2 FORM jpg 2 FILE E:\BillHilton1942.jpg 2 TITL Bill Hilton in 1942 2 NOTE 2 _SCBK Y 2 _PRIM Y 2 _TYPE PHOTO 2 _SSHOW Y 1 OBJE 2 FORM jpg 2 FILE E:\BillandClymena'sWedding.jpg 2 TITL Bill and Clymena's Wedding 2 NOTE 2 _SCBK Y 2 _PRIM N 2 _TYPE PHOTO 2 _SSHOW Y 0 @I12@ INDI 1 NAME William Luther /Hilton/ 2 SURN Hilton 2 GIVN William Luther 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 4 Oct 1873 2 PLAC Mars Hill, Barry, Missouri 1 DEAT 2 DATE 10 Aug 1944 2 PLAC Crane, Stone, Missouri 1 BURI 2 DATE 13 Aug 1944 2 PLAC Crane Community Cem. 1 AFN 10TF-1GG 1 _UID 5BD5B5382167ED46A4C30BBF98BD89B79E6C 1 FAMS @F9@ 1 FAMC @F13@ 1 NOTE !1. It records that Jonathan owned $2,000 worth of land which probably means at least 50 2 CONC 0 actes if not more. 2 CONT 2 CONT Jonathan was the third Hilton to acquire land along the Holston River. We have no record of h 2 CONC ow or when he came by these holdings.Reverend Samuel's will indicates that Jonathan was livin 2 CONC g to the northeast of Samuel's land in 1835. Thomas W., John W., and Wil 2 CONC liam O. are listed in the 1850 census of El Dorado County, California (Addinton's HISTORY O 2 CONC F SCOTT COUNTY lists David rather than John is an error). A decade later sad times fell on Jo 2 CONC nathan. His wife died in 1860. The second oldest dated tombstone in Darthula Cemetery is "F 2 CONC . Hilton died March 2, 1860 age 68, 22 days." The move was made during the Revolultionar 2 CONC y War and no later than 1778. Family tradition says that as a boy Samuel was trained to stan 2 CONC d at the head of the table and return thanks. In North Carolina the Hiltons apparently attend 2 CONC ed the Abbotts Creek Church of Rowan County. This church was located just two or three mile 2 CONC s north of father John Hilton's farm. One suspects that it was here that the Hiltons experien 2 CONC ced a change in religious denominations from Episcopalian to Baptist. 2 CONT 2 CONT Samuel married his wife Nancy about 1787. Their first child was born in 1788. Like Samuel, Na 2 CONC ncy is also reported to have been born in St. Mary's County, Maryland. No record of their mar 2 CONC riage or of her maiden name has been found. Samuel and Nancy and two sons were still living i 2 CONC n North Carolina at the time of the first U.S. census in 1790. He may have started visiting t 2 CONC he western settlements shortly thereafter, but he and his brothers were together in North Car 2 CONC olina in 1794. On December 20, 1795, he sold the farmland he had inherited from his father t 2 CONC o David Jones of Randolph County. He is presumed to have moved across the mountains either pr 2 CONC ior to or at that time to begin his ministry to the "near Mockison Gap" inhabitants. However 2 CONC , the first actual reference to his presence thereabouts is in 1803 (according to informatio 2 CONC n from E. Frank Hilton). 2 CONT 2 CONT Reverend Samuel was the first preacher in this section of the western settlements. He and Rev 2 CONC erend Jesse Wilson traveled widely by horseback to minister to the scattered families settlin 2 CONC g along the Wilderness Trail. In 1803 the two preachers and eleven others from Washington an 2 CONC d Russell Counties helped organize the Double Springs Church of Tennessee [near the Sulliva 2 CONC n High School in Kingsport]. Two yeaars later, on October 26, 1805, the "United Baptist Churc 2 CONC h of Christ at Big Moccasin Gap" was founded. It was the first church established in Scott Co 2 CONC unty. 2 CONT 2 CONT Reverend Samuel died April 24, 1830. His funeral was preached by Elder David Jesse who took h 2 CONC is text from Job 19:23-25. Nancy born 1764, died February 5, 1835 at age 71. For her funera 2 CONC l Elder Jesse chose his text form the first verse of Corinthians. Grave sites of Samuel and N 2 CONC ancy are not known. The family cemetery at Hiltons, Virginia, has two river rock, unscribed s 2 CONC tones, that Esther Hilton speculated were graves of the founders. This author suspects the sm 2 CONC all graveyard in Dowell Gap at the most probable burial site. 2 CONT 2 CONT The family folklore about Samuel's extensive land holdings is not substantiated by either pub 2 CONC lic or private records.Unfortunately Federal troops in December of 1864 destroyed the minut 2 CONC e books of Washingtyon County for the period 1786-1819. The tradition is that Samuel settle 2 CONC d abut 1795 on the north bank of the river upstream about 200 yards from the Hilton Gap and t 2 CONC hat the site remained under family ownership until 1995. "Tradition" seems to have blended Sa 2 CONC muel with his son John who was eventually the largest land holder of all the Hiltons and di 2 CONC d with certainty live at the traditional home site. One suspects that the Reverend Samuel wa 2 CONC s much more interested in pursuing his ministry that in acquiring land. 2 CONT 2 CONT Reverend Samuel and Nancy had five sons. Between 1836 or 1837 and certainly before 1840, tw 2 CONC o sons move to Missouri and another moved probably to an adjacent county in Tennessee. James Hilt 2 CONC on entered a claim for 300 acres in Guilford County on November 24, 1778, and a few days late 2 CONC r, December 17, John Hilton claimed 300 acres on Hunt's Fork of Abbott's Creek in Rowan Count 2 CONC y. These were the first of many land transactions made by John Hilton and his sons or brother 2 CONC s. They clustered near the point where Guilford, Randolph, and Rowan (now Davidson) Countie 2 CONC s meet, near the site of the present city of High Point. Court and land office records of th 2 CONC e next forty-five years show almost fifty transactions involving members of the Hilton famili 2 CONC es. 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1785, paying 50 shillings per 100 acres, John Hilton purchased an additional 640 acres fro 2 CONC m the State of North Carolina. The land lay on the Uwharrie River and Hamby's Creek at the we 2 CONC atern edge of Randolph county, adjoining Rowan County. Hamby's Creek originates in Randolph C 2 CONC ounty and crosses into Davidson County 2 1/2 miles south of the Guilford-Randolph County line 2 CONC ; one source of the Uwarrie river is a few hundred yards from this point and may have been o 2 CONC n the John Hilton holding. This allows us to locate with some exactness the land that would la 2 CONC ter be inherited by Samuel Hilton. 2 CONT 2 CONT It was a common practice, at the time under discussion, for a father to assist each son to es 2 CONC tablish himself financially at the time of the son's marriage by giving or settling land upo 2 CONC n him; as a result, it was usually the youngest son who inherited the final remnants of his f 2 CONC ather' property. On August 14, 1788, John Hilton, Sr. made a will leaving 290 actes or land a 2 CONC nd all the improvements thereon to son, Samuel. In the following month, on September 29, he s 2 CONC old 350 actes of Randolph County land to John Hilton, Jr. This was the northern portion of th 2 CONC e 640 actes he had purchased in 1785. Also in 1785, on February 2, John Hilton, Sr. had enter 2 CONC ed 50 acres in Randolph County and purchased it from the state. This acreage seems also to ha 2 CONC ve come into the hands of John, Jr., giving him a total of 400 acres. 2 CONT 2 CONT According to family legend, Samuel Hilton married his wife, Nancy, in 1787 but no public reco 2 CONC rds have been found in North Carolina to confirm this date nor to show the surname of Nancy 2 CONC . The census of 1790 shows Samuel living in Randolph County with his wife and two boys unde 2 CONC r the age of ten; also in the same county was John, Jr. with a wife, daughter and two sons. J 2 CONC ames, Jonathan, and Thomas Hilton were living in Rowan County. 2 CONT 2 CONT The will of John Hilton, Sr. was proved in open court by James Hilton and John Veach during t 2 CONC he June term, 1790, and on November 5, 1794, John, Jr. and William Tomlinson gave bond of 20 2 CONC 0 pounds to administer the estate. Since John, Sr. is thought to have died early in 1790, th 2 CONC e settling of his estate was probably delayed until after the death of his wife. 2 CONT 2 CONT A legal document mentioned in the minutes of the Randolph County court of Pleas and Quarter S 2 CONC essions on March 12, 1794, is of extreme importance to the family history because it establis 2 CONC hes the connection of the John Hilton family in North Carloina with the family in Maryland. I 2 CONC t is a power of attorney signed by James, Jonathan, Thomas, and Samuel Hilton appointing the 2 CONC ir brother, John Hilton, Jr., to transact business of the estate in Maryland. 2 CONT 2 CONT "State of North Carolina: Know all men by these presents that we James Hilton, Jonathan Hilto 2 CONC n, Thomas Hilton, and Samuel Hilton, sons and Joint Heirs of John Hilton, Deceased, of Randol 2 CONC ph County and State of North Carlina afoesaid at the time of his decease but formerly of ST.M 2 CONC ARY'S COUNTY, in the State of MARYLAND..." 2 CONT 2 CONT We have no knowledge of the outcome of this litigation. As the document indicates, the five s 2 CONC ons of John Hilton, Sr. were together in North Carolina as late as 1794 but they must have se 2 CONC parated soon after that. Jonathan Hilton sold his Rowan County land to James Hilton and, wit 2 CONC h his wife Elizabeth, moved to Jefferson County, Georgia. Samuel moved to Washington County 2 CONC , Virginia, and later, on December 20, 1795, sold the land he had inherited form his father t 2 CONC o David Jones for the sum of 90 pounds, 10 shillings. 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1797, John Hilton, Jr. sold his 400 acres to Samuel Low; this was the last Hilton land tra 2 CONC nsactiion recorded in Randolph County for more than 100 years. Aurora, Missouri 10 September 1903 2 CONT 2 CONT This family, which has for nearly three quarters of a century been prominent in Webster, Gree 2 CONC ne, and Lawrence counties, is probably of old English ancestry. The first direct ancestor o 2 CONC f the Missouri branch, so far as we can learn, was William S. Coleman, who with his wife, Eli 2 CONC zabeth (Shaw) Coleman, emigrated from Virginia to Roane county, east Tennessee, in 1828. 2 CONT After only four years in his new home William S. coleman died in July 1832, leaving a widow w 2 CONC ith five children, as follows: William J.,Thomas B., Mary A., John S., and Lydia E 2 CONT 2 CONT The history of that little family for the next decade is such as we somtimes see told in stor 2 CONC ies, only in this case it is the living truth. A story of limited means, of a brave mother de 2 CONC termined to keep her family together, and to give them the best that her poverty would permit 2 CONC . It was an uphill fight, but it was backed by an unflinching spirit in the mother, and b 2 CONC y a willingness to help in each of the children. And no fight was ever lost with that sort o 2 CONC f a combination. The mother lived to see her boys and girls grow to honorable manhood and wom 2 CONC anhood; with as good educations as the limited school of the time afforded; and at last wit 2 CONC h a comfortable home to shelter her old age. 2 CONT 2 CONT It woud be a pleasant task to write in detail of those years of strenuous effort it took fo 2 CONC r that brave mother to train up her family to self support. The daily planning, the steadfas 2 CONC t daily and hourly industy the plucky, determined fight to keep her little flock clother, fe 2 CONC d and sheltered, and the triumph that crowned it all. It would indeed be interesting, but tha 2 CONC t sort of a woman never told the story with her own lips. She never put it down in black an 2 CONC d white for the information of others, it is doubtful whether she ever realized what a brav 2 CONC e fight she was making; if you had called her a heroine, the chaces are that she would have b 2 CONC een offended, for of such stuff are heroines made. Suffice it to say, that she met single-han 2 CONC ded and alone, until such time as her children grew to her help, the thousand and one difficu 2 CONC lties that hedge the way of the widow and the orphan; met them and conquered them! And if tha 2 CONC t achievement does not entitle her to the name of heroine, then no human accomplishment eve 2 CONC r did. However 2 CONC , William was filled with the pioneering spirit and wanted a new field in which to try his br 2 CONC awn and brain.
