128. John Hilton
This John Hilton had a son, John, Jr. His other sons: James, Jonathan, Thomas and Samuel, were named for four of his brothers; this dupliction of names has made impossible the exact identification of some of the famiy members who took up land grants in North Carolina. James Hilton entered a claim for 300 acres in Guilford County on November 24, 1778, and a few days later, December 17, John Hilton claimed 300 acres on Hunt's Fork of Abbott's Creek in Rowan County. These were the first of many land transactions made by John Hilton and his sons or brothers. They clustered near the point where Guilford, Randolph, and Rowan (now Davidson) Counties meet, near the site of the present city of High Point. Court and land office records of the next forty-five years show almost fifty transactions involving members of the Hilton families.
In 1785, paying 50 shillings per 100 acres, John Hilton purchased an additional 640 acres from the State of North Carolina. The land lay on the Uwharrie River and Hamby's Creek at the weatern edge of Randolph county, adjoining Rowan County. Hamby's Creek originates in Randolph County and crosses into Davidson County 2 1/2 miles south of the Guilford-Randolph County line; one source of the Uwarrie river is a few hundred yards from this point and may have been on the John Hilton holding. This allows us to locate with some exactness the land that would later be inherited by Samuel Hilton.
It was a common practice, at the time under discussion, for a father to assist each son to establish himself financially at the time of the son's marriage by giving or settling land upon him; as a result, it was usually the youngest son who inherited the final remnants of his father' property. On August 14, 1788, John Hilton, Sr. made a will leaving 290 actes or land and all the improvements thereon to son, Samuel. In the following month, on September 29, he sold 350 actes of Randolph County land to John Hilton, Jr. This was the northern portion of the 640 actes he had purchased in 1785. Also in 1785, on February 2, John Hilton, Sr. had entered 50 acres in Randolph County and purchased it from the state. This acreage seems also to have come into the hands of John, Jr., giving him a total of 400 acres.
According to family legend, Samuel Hilton married his wife, Nancy, in 1787 but no public records have been found in North Carolina to confirm this date nor to show the surname of Nancy. The census of 1790 shows Samuel living in Randolph County with his wife and two boys under the age of ten; also in the same county was John, Jr. with a wife, daughter and two sons. James, Jonathan, and Thomas Hilton were living in Rowan County.
The will of John Hilton, Sr. was proved in open court by James Hilton and John Veach during the June term, 1790, and on November 5, 1794, John, Jr. and William Tomlinson gave bond of 200 pounds to administer the estate. Since John, Sr. is thought to have died early in 1790, the settling of his estate was probably delayed until after the death of his wife.
A legal document mentioned in the minutes of the Randolph County court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions on March 12, 1794, is of extreme importance to the family history because it establishes the connection of the John Hilton family in North Carloina with the family in Maryland. It is a power of attorney signed by James, Jonathan, Thomas, and Samuel Hilton appointing their brother, John Hilton, Jr., to transact business of the estate in Maryland.
"State of North Carolina: Know all men by these presents that we James Hilton, Jonathan Hilton, Thomas Hilton, and Samuel Hilton, sons and Joint Heirs of John Hilton, Deceased, of Randolph County and State of North Carlina afoesaid at the time of his decease but formerly of ST.MARY'S COUNTY, in the State of MARYLAND..."
We have no knowledge of the outcome of this litigation. As the document indicates, the five sons of John Hilton, Sr. were together in North Carolina as late as 1794 but they must have separated soon after that. Jonathan Hilton sold his Rowan County land to James Hilton and, with his wife Elizabeth, moved to Jefferson County, Georgia. Samuel moved to Washington County, Virginia, and later, on December 20, 1795, sold the land he had inherited form his father to David Jones for the sum of 90 pounds, 10 shillings.
In 1797, John Hilton, Jr. sold his 400 acres to Samuel Low; this was the last Hilton land transactiion recorded in Randolph County for more than 100 years. Thomas Hilton was in Rowan County as late as 1796 but is not listed there in the census of 1800 which did list John and James.

Hector's will reportedly lists wife and 7 children by name. Nathaniel and
Benjamin as executors. I cannot find the will abstract but haveit located
in ABSTRACT of NC Wills, 1690-1760. Maybe someone else has a copy.

Sorry for the delay in my reply. I just returned from vacation and started
going through my email.
I know we have Hector Hancock listed in our line, but I still have serious
doubts that he is in the correct place. Arvil and I hashed thisover about
a year ago, and for a lack of a better explanation, this is where is now
resides in our info.
A William Hancock and an Elinor Durant had a son, Hector in Carteret/Craven
Co., NC, but we aren't sure this William is the same one that isin ourline.Lisa

Lisa - According to our information, Hector was born 2 Aug 1712in Carteret,
NC and died there 27 Aug 1751. He married Ann Carver about 1732in Carteret.
He was never a part of the scene at Albemarle Parish. But Clement, who was
born as early as 1700, was right in there among some other Hancocks that we
do know.Arvil=========================================================================

Subject: Re: [HANCOCK-L] ClementArvil,
This suggestion was made only because Malinda said she didn't have any idea
where Clement was born. If he were the son of William Hancock and Elizabeth
Spencer, he would have to have been born in NC, as they moved there right
after marrying with son William, who was a baby at the time.
My opinion of my earlier post concerning Clement being the son of William
and Elizabeth Spencer Hancock still stands. I think it is a longshot that
he would have wound up in VA after being born and raised in NC,as that
wasn't a usual move. South and west was the usual pattern.
Since you seemed to be seriously considering William and Elizabeth Spencer
Hancock as Clement's parents is why I suggested it was the otherWilliam and
Elizabeth Hancock. I still have no idea where they originated, but suspect
it would be around the James City, VA area. Records for that area are so
scarce though. Also one of these groups of Hancocks seemed to have definate
financial problems which is demonstrated over and over in the Albemarle, NC
court records from the early 1700's. Could that have played a part in some
children going to live with relatives back in VA???LisaCheck outmy website at:

184. John Runyon
From Ancestral File (TM), data as of 2 January 1996.
John Runyon, b. 14 August 1705, Piscataway, Middlesex County, NJ, on Raritan River. he died ca 1797, at Brock's Gap in Rockingham County, Virginia; he is buried in a small cemetery in Brock's Gap, Virginia. John married, in New Jersey, Prudence Smalley, born 12 March 1698, the daughter of Joshua and Margaret Smalley. According to research and family members living in that area, they had two sons, Morris and Henry, and one daughter. Family tradition says tha she was killed by Indians. John and Prudence may have had other children.Evidently John (b.1705) left New Jersey sometime around 1732 of after. He was not mentioned in his father's Will made in 1750 and probated 1755. This could have been for a number of reasons. John, being the oldest of the children, could have taken his portion of the inheritance and moved away. It is uncertain whether he left because of family problems, or perhaps he was disinherited by his family. Family tradition has it that he was shunned in New Jersey. It is true that Peter had other children he did not mention in his Will.
Enter here are excerpts from letters written in 1981 an 1990, by a family member who has lived in Rockingham County most of his life, where this John became known as "John Runyon, Sr., of Brock's Gap." Letter 1990 reads as follows: "It seems that our John was Shunned by his family in New Jersey about 1730, at which time he came to the valley and setled at Tunnis, which was an Indian town of the tribe where Anna was living at the time he took her for his wife. At the time they were married John had a least three children from his legal wife. I don't think we will find a document to our John and Anna's marriage. (In those days Indian marriages were often performed in a quit ceremony with no document to to record... m. 2nd, ca 1750, Anna (christian name) Barefoot, (Indian name).
"John came to Augusta County, Virginia, now Rockingham County, before 1753, when he acquired a land deed from 'Jacob Goodpasture transferred to John Runying 90 acres of land lying on the north branch of Tunnis Creek in Brock's Gap, this 13 day of December 1753. signed Theou Lewis, Sec.'
"Also John Runyon was granted 98 acres of land in Brock's Gap, Rockingham County, Virginia in 1773. This ninety-eight actes was near the ninety acre lot mentioned above.
"John Runyon, Sr., of Brock's Gap lived on the land he acquired here for the rest of his life. When he died, he was buried on this property. There is a stone for a marker, carved with 1798 for his death date... (It is a small cemetery a short distance up the mountain from the present Runion Cemetery, near the Brock's Gap Church, on Runion Creek. The land on which this little cemetery is located still belongs in a Runion family, as of this writing.)
"John Runyoh, Sr., and John Lincoln, ancestor of Abraham Lincoln, were friends and neighbors there in the Shenandoah Valley. Both were members of Linville Creek Baptist Church, later known as Brock's Gap Church on Runion Creek. The Lincolns came from Pennsylvania, contemporaneous with the arrival of John Runyon in Rockingham County."

Very little is known of the Layman Family. Susannah Layman married Abraham Mullendore and their children are given in the note above. We do know two of her brothers and a sister. Jacob Layman b 1753 in Reddon (Reading ) Pa. was a Rev. Soldier in the Va. line and filed for a pension. Daniel Layman who married about 1779 was also a brother. Susannah's sister, Elizabeth Layman married Jeremiah H. Compton, also a veterran of the Revolution. They were early settlers of Sevier Co. Tenn. Many believe that the surname Layman was originally Lehman. Information on this family is from the Rev. Wear pension applications of Jacob Layman and Jeremiah H. compton, as well as the Mullendore Family papers preserved by the family in Sevierville.
